6. 3D Scanning and printing

This week’s group assignment learns the characteristics of 3D printers and investigates what kind of design should be used to create data

3D Printer

3D printer used this time is below

Material

We Used Material is only PLA

  • PLA
    • Melt in 200~230°C
  • ABS(not used)
    • Melt in 230~260°C
  • Metal, suger etc (but not used)

TestPattern

We decided not to create test data by themselves but to use the data published on the web.

We Used this

Print with Replicator2

Prepare

  1. Open Makerbot print
  2. Import testdata
    • 1-1import
  3. Setting printer
    • Layer height
      • 0.3mm
    • Infill
      • 10%
    • number of shells
      • 2
        • mean 2 times making wall
    • Material
      • PLA
    • 1-2setting
  4. Preview
    • Time taken to print
      • 2h 43m
        • Even 0.3 mm it takes a very long time…
    • 1-3preview
  5. Export to SDCard
    • Note that it can not be read if it is a long name
    • Output in format exclusive for Makerbot printer
      • 1-4export

Printing

  1. Insert SD card and print out
    • 1-4inport
    • 1-4display
  2. Printing…
    • The first time I got warped
      • 1-5warped
  3. RePrinting…
    • The second time I put up double sided tape
      • 1-6tape
    • hmm…
      • 1-6good
    • Done
      • 1-6done
  4. Take out
    • 1-7takeout

Check

  1. Checking…
    • Like this
      • 1-7check1
      • 1-7check2
      • 1-7check3
  2. Measured
    • The measurement results are shown below

Result

We Examined the output result and found out the following.

  • The shape after output is not very accurate
    • The circle does not become a beautiful circle
    • Small irregularities can be made for each layer
  • Plus or minus 0.3 mm and comes out in a total width of about 0.6 mm
  • Start sagging from 60 degrees
